3 Tips on Being Proactive With AC Repair

AC-technician-performing-repairs

When it comes to expensive appliances like your air conditioner, you really don’t want to take any risks. You’d certainly much rather have a repair done than end up needing to replace the entire AC unit. So how can you make sure your air conditioner will last as long as possible? Being proactive with AC repair can prevent small issues from becoming major problems. Check out these helpful tips.

1: Pay Attention to Proper Functioning

If you know what your air conditioner looks, smells, and sounds like and how well it gets the job done when it’s in tip-top condition, you’ll be able to recognize when something is going wrong. But how can you make sure it’s in tip-top condition and that nothing is already wrong? We’re so glad you asked. The answer is annual maintenance. Have a professional AC technician give the entire system a once-over every year. This is generally done in the spring. The air conditioner will be cleaned and lubricated and all the components will be inspected and tested to make sure everything is functioning perfectly. If there’s a tiny issue like a loose screw, it will be addressed, so you won’t hear loose components buzzing or rattling. Then, simply pay attention. Listen to the sounds of normal operation. Notice how strong the airflow is from your vents. If something does go wrong (and that maintenance will dramatically reduce the likelihood that it will) you’ll notice right away that something is different.

2: Get Repairs Promptly

When you do notice that something is different, get AC repair in Seguin, TX right away. It might be that you’ve been hearing hissing, bubbling, rattling, banging, or clicking. It might be that you’ve noticed a strange, chemical smell. It might be that the cycles, which used to happen every fifteen minutes or so, have gotten very short. Whatever it is, don’t ignore it and hope for the best. Many AC problems will get progressively worse if the system continues to operate without repair. More and more refrigerant will be lost to a leak, more and more overheating will lead to a completely fried fan motor, or a slightly loose component will fly free as a projectile inside the unit, damaging other components. Worst of all, many AC problems will put additional strain on the compressor, which is both the most vital component and the most expensive to replace.

3: Set Yourself Up for Repair Success

When you do have an AC technician coming to repair your air conditioner, make sure the way is clear to both the indoor and outdoor units, and that there’s room for the technician to work. Put your pets in another part of your home so they won’t get in the way and slow things down. Get out any paperwork you have relating to past repairs, replaced parts, and when the unit was last maintained, which can help streamline the diagnostic process for the technician. And don’t forget to ask questions. How long might I expect this system to last? Is there anything I should keep an eye (or ear) out for in the future? How can I get better performance or greater efficiency out of this unit? Is there anything you would recommend? Qualified technicians are an amazing resource, so don’t waste this opportunity to learn more.
