Last Winter Was Tough: Do You Have a Heater That Can Handle This Winter?

furnace-old

Last winter was one of the coldest to ever tear through San Antonio, so you probably are more aware of the heating requirements in your house than ever before. We want our customers to have the effective heating systems necessary for any winter cold shocks that may come this 2021–2022 season. The most important step for most homeowners is to make sure they have a maintenance tune-up and inspection scheduled with our professionals. Nothing helps a heater handle the cold better than this annual service.

But some of our customers may need a larger service to ensure they have reliable heating: a new heating installation in San Antonio, TX. Are you one of those homeowners with doubts about your heating system’s ability to take on another winter? If so, right now is the best time to schedule a replacement system. We know you don’t want to make this decision in haste, so let’s talk more about your current heater…

How long have you had this heating system?

The age of a heating system is a good place to start when considering a replacement. If you have doubts about your heater because of recent performance issues, its age becomes a crucial factor when choosing whether to repair or replace the unit. Here are some general service life expectancies:

  • Gas furnace: 15 years
  • Electric furnace: 20 years
  • Heat pump: 10–15 years

If your heater is older than these estimates, we recommend making replacement a priority.

Are you paying more for heating than before?

A single repair problem with a heater will often mean a rise in its energy use. But if you’re experiencing a general rise in winter energy costs, and the heater is getting old, you have a big warning of a system that’s in an irreversible decay. Getting a new heater means you’ll start paying less for heating right away.

Has the heater delivered subpar performance?

Last winter put your heating system to a serious test. How did it do? If you found yourself raising the thermostat more often because the heater couldn’t keep up with your normal comfort needs, or if there were cold spots around the house, you have a heater that’s starting to fail—or it was never powerful enough to begin with, at least for that level of cold.

Are you generally worried the heater might suddenly fail?

This is a more subjective question, but it’s probably the most important one. If you have a sense that your heater is too old and worn down for you to trust it will make it through another winter without breaking down at the worst time, then we advise you go with your gut instinct. You know something isn’t right, and you won’t enjoy peace of mind through the season with a heater you don’t trust.
